Adolescent Activities Predict Behavior

Researchers say out-of-school time can be developmentally enriching for adolescents, providing experiences that support growth in healthy behaviors.

However, they said it also can be detrimental, affording opportunities for unsupervised or harmful activities that increase the likelihood adolescents will engage in delinquent activities.

Society for Research in Child Development researchers said adolescents from disadvantaged families were more likely to engage in activities removed from adult supervision.

Such activities predicted increases in problem behaviors among young adolescents, particularly drug and alcohol use and school misconduct. In contrast, parental monitoring was particularly protective against problem behaviors.

Increases in problem behavior over time were strongest for youth in unsupervised settings who also experienced additional risks, such as an early tendency toward problem behavior, little parental monitoring of their activities, or low levels of social cohesion in their neighborhoods.
