Chromium Fights Depression

A U.S. study finds people with depression who suffer from carbohydrate cravings improve significantly when given chromium picolinate.

In the double-blind study more than 100 people with atypical depression were given either chromium picolinate or a placebo. Researchers say the group given the chromium picolinate showed significant improvement in four areas -- carbohydrate cravings, increased appetite, increased eating and mood variation during the day.

"For years, the link between depression, insulin sensitivity, and the value of dietary chromium picolinate has been hinted at in small studies and this trial may bring us closer to understanding the connection," said Dr. John P. Docherty, president and CEO of Comprehensive NeuroScience Inc, and adjunct professor of psychiatry at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

About 19 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with depression, and 42 percent of them suffer from atypical depression, marked by carbohydrate cravings, weight gain and fatigue.
